Client: Global Paint and Coatings Manufacturer
Issue: Production Shift to Hand Sanitizer
Solution: 20k PSI Water Blaster With 3-D Spinner
A global paint and coatings manufacturer in Illinois had a large order for hand sanitizer to fill due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The order caused an issue because the plant, which typically makes latex and oil based paints, wasn’t designed with the excess storage capacity that was now needed to store ethanol, a key ingredient in the hand sanitizer formula.
As the plant already relies on ERC Midwest for vacuum tanker transportation, wastewater treatment, fuels blending, industrial cleaning, water blasting and confined space entry solutions, ERC Midwest was top of mind with the plant manager when this need arose, and we got the call.
“Can you help us?” was the question. “Of course,” was our answer.
The client needed us to help convert 2 tanks in which mineral spirits raw material was typically stored into ethanol storage tanks. Doing so first required the removal and containerization of residual, flammable, hazardous mineral spirits waste from the tanks for future disposal. This was done using a specialized vacuum cyclone system designed by ERC Midwest.
Once that work was complete, ERC Midwest began a high-volume, triple-rinse water flush process driven by a 20k PSI water blasting rig, equipped with a specialized 3-D rotating spinner that was inserted into an opening on top of each tank. The spinner’s unique design gives it the ability to wash and flush every square inch of the tank’s interior, ensuring multiple water flush contacts with every portion of the tank. In addition, by using the 3-D spinner, rather than manual pressure washing units operated by technicians inside the tank, the need for dangerous, confined space entry was greatly reduced, improving the health and safety profile of the entire project.
Today, the client is hard at work making millions of hand sanitizer containers available to the world and helping to create a big safety win for all of us in the coronavirus pandemic.
We were proud to be the guide that helped this client achieve its goals.
Another complex waste problem solved. Happy Client!
